Geocaching

Geocaching

Did you know that there are over 2 million active geocaches around the world? The 2 millionth geocache is found in Alice Springs, Australia. Neither Did I!

Then I read a book, Geocaching for Idiots, and I was hooked.

Geocaching is like a high tech treasure hunt. It’s played throughout the world and attracts adventure seekers of every type. Using GPS devices, the idea is to locate hidden containers (called geocaches) located in various outdoor locations and then share your experiences online. It’s enjoyed by people of every age group and encompasses strong support for the environment and a strong sense of community.

Sound like fun? Combine possible hiking, maybe some travel, a lot of treasure hunting, a bit of problem solving, logic – and there you have it – geocaching.

Anyone interested, call Don Benson at 828-420-9911 call Robin Worcester 625-5549.

Out & About

Out & About

Our Out & About group is where YOU can suggest and lead an Adventure! Make ADVENTURE a major part of our activities for our group!

If you would like to get a group together and organize and outing for the Out & About club (i.e. trip to a playhouse, symphony, museum, movies, etc.), contact Ennis Julian at 702-499-3567 or email to president@lakelurenewcomers.com. We will then put a note in the monthly newsletter to announce the outing. Hope to hear from you soon.

LET’S ALL GET INVOLVED!

Potluck

Potluck

Potluck dining is one of the many opportunities available to members of the Lake Lure Newcomers’ Club. All members of the Newcomers’ Club are eligible for membership.

How Potlucks Work

  • – Everyone who participates is required to host at least once during the year.
  • – The Potluck Chairperson will assign the hosts for each month and then assign 3 other couples to attend at the host’s home. There are some exceptions if your house cannot hold 8 people. An email will be sent out to all participants that month.
  • – The host will call the people assigned to their home and ask them to either bring an appetizer, salad or dessert, set up the time and give directions. The host supplies the entree and drinks.
  • – Then, enjoy the company with new or “old” friends!!

If you’d like to participate in Potluck, please contact Karen Barton at (828) 625-4591 or email potluck@lakelurenewcomers.com.

Vista Seekers Hiking

Vista Seekers Hiking

Join the Vista Seekers club for monthly hikes! Hikes are scheduled once per month, usually on a Saturday with a meeting to carpool at 9am. The meeting location is the main parking lot of the Rumbling Bald Resort. Hikers who live farther away can be picked up on the way. There is no need to call. Just show up and we will be happy to have you.

The hikes are usually in our area, and they are often within one hour driving distance. All hikes consist mostly of about two hours of hiking with some breaks and  are mostly in the moderate category. Sometimes we have some steep inclines, which we will announce in the newsletter.

We have anywhere from 10-30 people join in our regular hikes. They’re a great opportunity to get out in nature, forget the everyday hassles and enjoy our beautiful mountain home.

If you’re interested in joining the Vista Seekers or have questions, please email Russ Meade at hiking@lakelurenewcomers.com.
